Desktop icons not loading
I have a series of shortcuts that are deployed via Group Policy and for some reason I can't get their icons to work. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why these icons aren't working, I could sure use all of your guys' help. I won't say that having a shortcut's icon located out on your network won't work, but I would surely expect at least occasional problems when a machine's network connection is the least bit wonky.
Though I'm sure you're just trying everything you can think of to make the consarn thing work If mapping a new icon locally doesn't work, then your problem isn't the policy or even the location, but something else.
As a test, I just created a shortcut was able to switch the icon to an ICO file in my own Pictures folder as well as the Public picture folder. A batch as mentioned can correct this. You can use PDQ or some other means to push the batch to take care of it. Are you sure the path is correct? For testing, can you change it to something that does not use a variable? Group policy preferences don't really like default environment variables - although anecdotally, I would hear of people having some success with this.
I would put them somewhere else - lots of times I'll just create a publicly shared folder on the network and stash my icons there, but YMMV. For an example of what variables work best in Group Policy Preferences, hit 'F3' in any of the fields and you'll see what I mean. Based on your suggestion I copied all of the icons to our "Public" drive that everybody has read access to. I then repointed all shortcuts in group policy to use the corresponding icons contained in that new location using a UNC path.
For some reason though the icons still won't show up. Okay, your questions gave me a thought. So I changed the policy to point to the icons via drive letter, all users get this share on the same letter so that shouldn't be an issue. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question. Here's the details. I've tried dropping the shortcuts on the individual user's desktop as well as the public desktop. No errors are displayed in the Event Viewer in regards to Group Policy I can browse to the folder containing the icons and view them without issue. If I attempt to manually set the icon nothing happens, I can browse to the icon and select it and WIndows continues to display the default icon.
The policy is set to "Replace" with "Remove when no longer applied" but I've also tried Update. Best Answer. Bahnjee Jul 13, at UTC. What sort of shortcuts are they?
